I love to cook and I love to eat good food, so I fit right in here in Shreveport, Louisiana.
We've got plenty of good places around town to park and eat. This is just a short listing of some of my favorites.
Panos
- Panos is located on Milam Street in downtown Shreveport where the Panos brothers, Chris and Andrew, have been turning out a consistent mix of home style cooking for the last few decades.
The menu changes from day to day throughout the week, but remains the same week after week. That is one of the things I love the most about eating at Panos, the consistency. You always know what to expect when you walk in the door. Friendly owners and the food is always prepared fresh in exactly the same manner. If you like the meal you have this week, you can be sure you will enjoy the same meal next week.
The prices on the menu are very reasonable, some of the lowest in town in fact. You can't beat their #1 breakfast special. Two eggs any way you like them, choice of meat, grits or hashbrowns and toast for under four bucks. Where else are you going to find a deal like that?
Whether you go in for a burger or geero to go, or sit down for one of their great daily lunch specials, you can't go wrong when you go to Panos. Stop in and tell them I said "Hi!". They may even point to me and say "Hi" right back! My favorites include their Geero's (best I've ever had), and the liver and onions (also the best I've ever had) which are featured on the Wednesday menu.
- Get addicted to Taste! Tacomania is billed as a Mexico City cantina and tacqueria. I'm not yet sure what that last word means, but I know Tacomania means good Mexican food. Tony, Maria and Jesus along with several members of their extended family have turned a startup of just a few years ago into a tradition in this area.
Previously located across from Broadmoor Garage, they recently moved down the street to the old Pizza Hut building when it became obvious that they had no choice but to expand. Their new facility provides them a comfortable bar in the smoking area, a large non-smoking area and a spacious enclosed porch area which has thankfully remained non-smoking as well. The porch area is able to be reserved for large groups and parties.
Serving from a large menu of varied dishes and a well accompanying bar, the friendly staff at Tacomania can satisfy your taste for south of the border cuisine. My favorites are the Popeye Quesadias, a mixture of spinach, cheese, mushrooms and onions sandwiched in a lightly toasted soft flour tortilla; Bill's Pasta Salad, and Maria's own home-made tamales. Dos Equis is always on tap, or opt for a bottle of Negra Modelo; both excellent accompaniments to the cuisine. Of course they have Sangria and your favorite frozen margaritas too!
Be sure you check out the colorful artwork Shelton painted on the walls the next time you are there.
Hong Kong City
- Hands down, the best oriental buffet in Shreveport-Bossier. Don't get me wrong, there are a number of good ones, but Hong Kong City is the best in my book. Despite other restaurant's bragging of the largest buffet, Hong Kong has the largest, with the greatest number of entrees.
The owners bought the old TS Station on Shreveport-Barksdale Boulevard a couple of years ago and spent several months transforming it into a beautiful new restaurant. The service is super friendly and efficient, and the food is always fresh and piping hot.
My personal favorites are the sweet and extremely spicy General Tso's Chicken, and the simple but delicious Chicken and Mushrooms. The Mongolian Pork has a delicious seasoning, and is made complete with the inclusion of zuchini and carrots. You must also try the Chicken with Garlic Sauce, a dish with a hint of sweet and sour, perfectly accompanied by the ample pieces of water chestnut, carrots, onions, green and sweet red bell pepper.
Non-smokers will be pleased to know that after many complaints ( I am certain it wasn't just me ) they enclosed the porch and moved the smokers out there. I just recently learned that on Sundays the entire restaurant is a smoke free facility.
